Controversial Nick Bockwinkel Loss In Memphis (12-27-82) Memphis Wrestling, Mid-South Coliseum

January 30, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Lance Russell and Jerry Lawler introduce tape of the Nick Bockwinkel vs. Jerry Lawler title match at the Midsouth Coliseum. The tape shows Bockwinkel pinning Lawler several times while the referee is knocked out. Then, while Bockwinkel is helping the referee recover, Lawler delivers a running double axe handle from behind and quickly pins him. Immediately, the ref suddenly recovers and makes a fast count–one, two, three–and Lawler wins.

Hey, it happens, right? But, the thing is, Nick had both feet dangling over the ropes so it wasn’t actually a legal pin. Nick vehemently protests the loss but the only outlet for his frustration is Lance, who is clearly in Lawler’s camp and won’t admit anything except that a pinfall occurred. Thus another World Champion loses his belt to Lawler in Memphis.

Play-by-play commentary: Lance Russell
Referee: Jerry Calhoun
Date: December 27, 1982
